Must Buy Before You Fly — You Cannot Purchase From Inside China

This is the most important thing to know before your trip. Due to China's internet restrictions, you cannot access the Ovosim website, receive the QR code email, or install a new eSIM profile from within mainland China. Beijing: Capital Coverage

Beijing has comprehensive 5G coverage across tourist areas. Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, and the Summer Palace all have strong Unicom signal. Great Wall coverage varies by section: Badaling (80km from Beijing) has good 4G. Mutianyu has 4G in main tourist areas. Remote unrestored sections like Jinshanling have intermittent 3G — download offline maps before any Great Wall excursion.

Payments in China — Set Up Before You Land

China operates almost entirely on WeChat Pay and Alipay. Both now accept international Visa/Mastercard for tourist transactions, but the setup process requires internet connectivity. Having Ovosim active before you land means you can configure WeChat Pay or Alipay at the airport before you need to pay for anything. Cash (CNY yuan) is accepted at major tourist sites but increasingly difficult to use in everyday situations.

Hong Kong: A Separate Special Region
