Do I Need a VPN in China?

OVOSIM Support Team · Updated May 2026

Yes. China operates the Great Firewall — a nationwide internet filtering system that blocks most major Western apps and websites. This applies to all networks inside China including international eSIMs. Your OVOSIM eSIM will give you a working data connection in China, but without a VPN you will not be able to access Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, or most apps you rely on daily.

Install your VPN before flying — not after landing

VPN apps are blocked in the Chinese App Store. Once you are inside China you cannot download a VPN from the App Store or Google Play. If you land without a VPN installed, you will not be able to get one. Install and test at home before your flight.

What is blocked in China?

Google (Search, Maps, Gmail, YouTube, Drive)
WhatsApp
Instagram
Facebook
Twitter / X
Snapchat
Telegram
Signal
The New York Times, BBC, and most Western news sites

What works without a VPN in China?

WeChat — China's primary messaging app, install before flying
Baidu Maps — best for navigation inside China
DiDi — China's Uber equivalent, works without VPN
Alipay and WeChat Pay — for payments
iMessage and FaceTime (Apple to Apple only)

Which VPN works in China in 2026?

Not all VPNs work in China. The Great Firewall actively blocks VPN protocols and many providers stop working without warning. The two most consistently reliable VPNs for China in 2026 are:

  • ExpressVPN — the most widely used VPN for China, with dedicated servers optimized for Chinese network conditions. Has a Lightway protocol that performs well against blocking.
  • Astrill — popular with long-term China residents and frequent visitors. StealthVPN protocol is particularly effective in China.

Both are paid services. Subscribe, download, and test before flying. Open the VPN and confirm it connects before you board your flight.

Note: OVOSIM does not endorse or have any commercial relationship with any VPN provider. The recommendations above are based on general traveler experience. VPN effectiveness in China can change — always check recent reviews before your trip.

How to set up before flying to China

  1. Install your VPN at home — ExpressVPN or Astrill
  2. Test it — open the VPN, connect to a server, and confirm Google and WhatsApp load
  3. Install your OVOSIM eSIM at home on WiFi before flying
  4. Download offline Google Maps for the cities you are visiting as a backup
  5. Install WeChat — it is the primary communication app in China and works without a VPN. You will need it for local contacts, restaurants, and transport
  6. Download Baidu Maps offline — more accurate than Google Maps for Chinese addresses
  7. On landing, turn on your VPN before opening any blocked apps

Does my OVOSIM eSIM work in China?

Yes — OVOSIM China plans connect to China Unicom or China Telecom and provide 4G/LTE data throughout mainland China including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, and Xi'an. The eSIM activates on landing with no mandatory delay — unlike Russia, China has no 24-hour data block.

The data connection is what your VPN runs on. Without the OVOSIM eSIM providing data, the VPN has nothing to route traffic through. The eSIM and VPN work together.
